Aviation in North America
The market place continues to be dominated by the big three ventures (Star Alliance, Skyteam and Oneworld) and is starting to show positive signs of recovery since the 2008 economic downturn. Notably, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines have tripled their presence in North America since 2004.
Largely due to the size and maturity of the market, North America is forecast to grow at only 3.0% in the next years, however there is still a strong future for aviation jobs in the USA. Opportunities though can be limited to foreign crew as America produces the most pilots per capita of population. The salary scales are notoriously unbalanced for non-union pilots making it less attractive than other destinations such as Asia to go and operate.
What is it like to be a pilot in North America?
North America is the largest and most mature market in Aviation and has some of the greatest variety in job opportunities for pilots. Flying opportunities exist with huge mainline legacy carriers, largest low cost operators, freight carriers, private aircraft and charter companies.
North America has a vast diversity in culture, landscape and lifestyle from East coast to West, which certainly make the life of a pilot more interesting and an abundance of attractions to visit whilst you are there. The weather can be some of the most extreme which adds hugely to the challenges faced by the modern airline pilot.
Very many pilots will have spent at least some of the early career flying in the USA whilst training so the lure of returning back when possible is gladly taken by many.
With a robust safety culture in America and the main language being English it remains a desired place of choice for most pilots to operate at least once in their lives.
